Movie Full Storyline

It was Jawaharlal Nehru who changed the name of a small town, Durjanpur, to Sajjanpur, and that was about all the change that had occurred there since then.

The town still lacks adequate infrastructure and safe drinking water. In a 24 hour period, electricity is out for almost 23 hours, and most people, even though they own mobile phones, cannot speak or write English.

One of the residents, who does speak and write English fluently, Mahadev Kuswah (Shreyas Talpade), lives with his mother, and they both run a small vegetable store. Mahadev obtained a university degree and assists residents with written correspondence for a fee. Amongst his clients are Man Singh - who wants his homicidal wife to stand for the Municipal elections; a eunuch, Munnibai Mukhrani (Ravi Jhankal), who also wants to stand for elections; Kamala( Amrita Rao) desperate for a communication with her husband who lives in Mumbai; a snake charmer who is trying to make a living with fake snakes and is trying to locate his father; Ram Kumar.

Shyam Benegal’s most entertaining ever film

09 April 2013

Legendary art house director Shyam Benegal shows that he can also make lighter movies with this intelligently crafted comedy about a letter writer in a village who affects different people’s lives, whilst desperately trying to get ahead. Apart from the fact that it is a lot more intelligent than the slapstick comedies that usually emerge from Bollywood, what makes this satire special is the very engaging characters. The stand-out cast of talented actors give each one of the characters a memorable quality in what many critics described as Benegal’s most entertaining ever film.

A pleasure to watch

19 September 2012

Really funny movie and very entertaining. It is very cleverly made and captures the spirit of the village whilst giving a forward thinking perspective about everything that goes on there. Love the 'kukoor' scene at the end - classic comedy moment. A pleasure to watch such a talented cast and different kind of story to a lot of other films.
